Lanna’Table

A beguiling, lightweight design for a table lamp that is reminiscent of the fascinating tradition of the Lanna. This ancient Thai population used to release hundreds of lanterns into the night sky during festivals. And it is as if one of these had floated down into the most sophisticated and contemporary interiors, recreating the magic with its warm, welcoming light.

The collection combines the rawness of the flat woven look and feel with all of the acoustical and practical advantages, making the carpet material superior to any interior design. Rawline Scala comprises three design themes, Minimal, Reflex and Heritage, each celebrating the eternal textures favoured by fashion and different cultures in all times. The references to the textiles’ textures and weaving structures are evident in the design expressions embracing three pattern scales from small to medium and large.

Moss evokes childhood memories of running barefooted in the deep, green forest and brings back the feeling of extreme softness between your toes. An almost bouncing underlay that excites your underfoot senses, Moss brings that exhilarating and tickling feeling from your feet to your entire body. The voluminous and agile surface reproduces the diversity of the forest floor’s multiple structures and colours. The glossy look of the carpet yarn reflects the mysterious interplay between moist and light as when rays of sunshine catch drops of dew to make them sparkle like diamonds.  Moss adds a sprinkling of soft luxury to your hotel lobby, lounge area, conference room or reception.

Yoko "dining"

Yoko "dining"

minotti > Chair

Yoko, a light and elegant seating design; a Japanese name and Scandinavian lines that come together in a piece of furniture with an aesthetic matrix, flavoured by both cultures. A contrast in constant equilibrium thanks to the skilful craftsmanship of the Japanese-Danish couple Inoda+Sveje. The continuous cross-reference between the two cultures, their styles and manufacturing skills shapes a project composed of an armchair, a dining little armchair and a bench/footstool characterised by a dual lightness: physical and aesthetic. Delicate and sinuous lines, created with precious cabinet-making interlocking techniques that enrich the structure of legs and armrests in solid ash open pore wood lacquered with a Liquorice colour, or in solid Canaletto walnut stained Light Brown, a chromatic choice that lends a more decisive tone to the elegance of the silhouette. The wooden frame has a joint where the leg meets the armrest, both at the front and at the back: a structural joint that becomes decorative thanks to the clever use of the wooden material. In this project, the great expertise in woodworking that has always been characteristic of Nordic and Japanese craftsmanship meets the historical know-how of a Made in Italy company that has been an expert in exquisite upholstered furniture for decades. Yoko is the harmonious union of technology, elegance and comfort.

Having conceived a design for an all-plastic chair made from one piece, it took Verner Panton several years to find a manufacturer. He first came into contact with Vitra in 1963 and together they developed the Panton Chair, which was presented in 1967. It was hailed as a sensation and received numerous prizes. The original version of the chair with a glossy lacquer finish is still marketed today under the name Panton Chair Classic. Referring to the 50th anniversary of the Panton Chair, <a href="/en-me/magazine/details/please-have-a-seat">Marianne Panton</a> talks about living with her husband, the creation of the chair icon and the two limited editions Panton Chrome and Panton Glow from 2018.

Miniatures Bocca

Miniatures Bocca

vitra > Styling

The use of cold-expanded polyurethane makes traditional methods of constructing furniture redundant. One series of sculptural furniture objects stands out amongst the furniture designs of the &#187;Studio 65&#171; group, since it makes radical use of the freedom of design allowed by this new material. And the style of this furniture demonstrates characteristics originating in the pictorial arts of the 1960s: the softening of a Claes Oldenburg, the naive stylization to be found in comics and commercial art, or the giant, intoxicated dimensions assumed by 1960s objects.<br/><br/>Alongside an armchair in the shape of a pillared Greek temple and a Babylonian shrine as a playsystem for children, Studio 65's contribution to the &#187;radical design&#171; included a sofa in the shape of a woman's mouth. The subtitle Studio 65 gave to its Sofa Bocca: &#187;alias lips, alias Marylin&#171;, is a reference to the inspiration for this design and its symbolism. Salvador Dal&#237;, to whom the idea for a design of this kind has been attributed, was quoted by Studio 65 in this context as follows: &#187;Objects with a symbolic function leave no room for formal considerations. They are characterized only by each individual's idea of love and are above any notions of shape.&#171;<br/>

Freeform Sofa, Freeform Ottoman

Freeform Sofa, Freeform Ottoman

vitra > Sofa

The sculptural quality of Noguchi's design vocabulary finds expression in the Freeform Sofa: it is entirely different from other designs of the same period, appearing in combination with the Ottoman like an enlarged sculpture of flat, rounded river stones. The slender organic forms are fluid and graceful. Noguchi emphasises the lightness of the elements with thin yet comfortable upholstery and a choice of cover fabrics in natural colours.<br/><br/>The Freeform Sofa and companion Ottoman were produced around 1950 in limited numbers. Today, the few remaining pieces achieve record prices at auction. Since 2002, the group has been produced by the Vitra Design Museum as a fully authentic re-edition. The sofa is suitable not only for use in living spaces, but also in lobbies, hotels and retail shops.

Gala

Gala

sabaitalia > Sofa

Cristina Celestino designs for Saba the new Gala seating system, thus establishing a collaboration with the company. The project responds to the desire of investigating the sofa as a place and not only as a mere functional product, to the aspiration of dematerializing the very concept of traditional living and to create a sofa with a strong iconographic design component. The “sofa” is a place of exchange, it generates new experiences and it shapes interior spaces. With a subtle reference to the retro-future atmosphere of sofas that inhabited the ‘70s, the new collection explores the flexibility of the upholstered object with a no gender, sculptural and sophisticated volume, which lends itself to interpreting different visions of interiors, from residential to hospitality contexts. The central backbone is a vertical element that draws pleated curves ready to accommodate, both on the front as well as on the back, a seat-pouf element of different depths. The many possible configurations give life to a “hybrid” and flexible sofa with which one can interact. In a collective utopian imagination, the name Gala is associated to the concept of elegance and sophistication, but Gala is also an ornament, a decoration that is created with a rippled textile band and in our case, Gala becomes the structure of the upholstery itself. Gala is also one of the planets in Star Wars and an indirect tribute to the world of stars, to the optimism and the avant-garde that characterized that era.

Vela

Vela

sabaitalia > Sofa

The sails, fixed to the boat mast, unfold urged by the breeze and then swell majestically, creating sophisticated lines that unravel the murmur of the winds. Since always, sails have represented a symbol of compromise between man and nature, as the dialogue between these two worlds. This concept is translated into Vela, Italian for “sail”, a sofa whose silhouette and precious details recall the elegance of this object. The fabric upholstery subtly alludes to the mainsail and the jib, tracing stylistically defined imaginary trajectories. The quilting is a strong reference to the unfurled sail and the diagonals that cross it represent its distinctive element. Exclusively designed fabric collection, fully removable covers.

Moulds is a collection of suspended lights, showcasing Czech crystal at its most resilient and lively form. The series captures a specific moment when molten glass resists its expected shape and freely escapes from the mould as a random, amorphous bubble. The energizing effect of this series arises from the contrast of materials, using the traditional craft techniques of blowing crystal glass into a beech form. Integrated LED light sources were set directly within the charred form, creating an impression that the heat and energy of the glassmaker’s kiln remained inside, in historic reference to the art of Czech glassmakers.

<p>A passion for earth as a natural material and for rammed earth, an ancient construction technique.</p> <p>The combination of these patterns evolves into the concept of Pisé Inserti, more slabs of immense decorative impact, generated by the two-dimensional criss-crossing of exquisite, rounded geometrical forms: the designer combines the natural earthen shades with apparently random curved lines that evoke the uneven trapezia with rounded corners used by Gio Ponti.</p> <p>These are also available in the large 120x280 cm size and 6 mm thickness in three variants: Pisé Inserti A, Pisé Inserti B and Pisé Inserti C. COMPATTA’s potential is further enhanced by three-dimensional subjects of varying shapes, which can be built up into mesh-backed mosaics to create sculptural forms on walls. These extensions to the collection are called Inserti Melange, Inserti Sabbia-Argilla and Inserti Limo-Ghiaia and are produced in 9 mm thickness and 30x30 cm size.</p> <p>The collection is born from a sustainable and virtuous approach and is part of <a href="https://www.florim.com/en/company/sustainability/carbonzero-florim/">CarbonZero</a>, Florim's range of Carbon Neutral surfaces.</p> <p>The COMPATTA collection, designed by Federico Peri, combines a passion for earth as a natural material and an interest in a very ancient construction technique.<br>The primary inspiration derives from close observation of the many strata within the ground and the mixtures of elementary particles of which it consists. The design concept is completed by reference to the age-old rammed earth construction technique, used in northern Jordan since the eighth millennium BCE and widely applied in Yemen in many other desert or rural settings until the mid 19thC.<br>In this method, the raw earth is compacted inside wooden formwork to construct continuous structural walls, bearing walls or partitions inside homes, with a natural decorative effect due to the layering of the different shades of clay used. When creating his project for CEDIT, Peri was also influenced by several design inputs: from rural African homes to the clear, simple geometric forms and curved lines typical of the work of Gio Ponti, the curves central to the modernist gardens of Brazilian landscape artist Roberto Burle Marx, and the three-dimensional mosaics of English sculptor William Mitchell. In his murals in concrete, glass and recycled materials, Mitchell seems to combine some of the typical features of a variety of artistic movements, from Modernism to Brutalism, and also shows awareness of the issues concerning the structure of the landscape and the relationship with nature at the heart of Land Art. COMPATTA thus embodies strong links to the world of art and architecture, while bringing natural impressions with a remote, primitive flavour into modern living-spaces.</p>

Compatta Pisé Melange

Compatta Pisé Melange

florim > Wall tile-stone-brick

Ambrosia

Ambrosia

marset > Ceiling lamp

The starting point for the Ambrosia was to bring back the traditional Linestra lamp to update it and show that a technical, resolute design can also be poetic. The Linestra was initially a line of light, which transitioned into a modular system that can be extended to adapt to any space. Its design stems from a tubular structure with gentle lines that attaches to the ceiling, allowing the light to descend and gently illuminate any type of project. It is this diffuse light that fills the space, adding beauty. This lighting system is available in four pre-set lengths, from 120 to 315 cm. Extensions measuring 40 and 60 cm let you define the height from which to hang them. That way, you can adjust their distance from the ceiling to create visually uninterrupted compositions. The LED SMD 24V light tube is available in three warm colour temperatures, 2200K, 2700K and 3000K, and offers adjustable intensity. It can also be installed on a canopy that includes the driver, or hidden and recessed. The Ambrosia started out as a unique and decorative piece for a multi-brand luxury boutique in Madrid. The Ciszak Dalmas studio, along with Joan Gaspar, decided to revise it in an effort to combine simplicity, functionality and aesthetics. Its linear and unique design, a nearly flat segment of light, was made modular and asymmetric to create a soft and surprising lighting system.

Tesori Broccato grigio

Tesori Broccato grigio

florim > Wallcovering

East and West, a synthesis archieved through Italian taste. «My work often takes me to far-off lands, also remote in terms of their culture and traditions. Even without my being aware of it, I then metabolise these traditions and include them in the designs I subsequently produce.» Matteo Nunziati <p>"It is the architect's task to create a warm, livable space. Carpets are warm and livable. He decides for this reason to spread one carpet on the floor and to hang up four to form the four walls. But you cannot build a house out of carpets. Both the carpet and the floor and the tapestry on the wall required structural frame to hold them in the correct place. To invent this frame is the architect's second task."When Adolf Loos wrote his revolutionary essay on the "principle of cladding" in 1898, architecture was just entering the modern age. Building meant imagining structures capable of putting together different materials, but, Loos affirmed, it must also respect their individual characteristics. "Every material possesses a formal language which belongs to it alone and no material can take on the forms proper to another", the Austrian master therefore maintained. And there is no doubt that the spirit of these words extended throughout most Twentieth Century architecture, regardless of its location or style. When we look at Matteo Nunziati's designs for the CEDIT Tesori collection, we seem to be seeing geometrical purity and attention to detail at the service of a new "truth" of material. Because Matteo Nunziati views ceramics as a form of fabric.<br /> The woven patterns he imagines for the various styles in his collection "“ from Arabian to damask to more geometrical motifs "“ constantly seek to provide the soft, iridescent look of time-worn linen. In them, ceramics are raised from the status of poor relation of marble to become a luxury wall covering in their own right: almost a wallpaper, suitable however for both floors and walls, and an absolutely versatile material. No longer only for beautifying bathrooms, they can create new moods in every room of the house (and elsewhere) starting from the living-room. Naturally, the revolution has been mainly technological. The large slabs produced by CEDIT are more than 3 metres tall, and since they eliminate the serial repetition typical of conventional tiles, they generate a new relationship between the surface and its decoration. However, Nunziati does not use this to create, artist-like, a more eye-catching decorative composition that emphasises the slab's dimensions. Quite the opposite; the patterns he offers us attempt to break down what is left of the boundaries between substrates. In particular, the Arabian and damask styles, in the version with "timeworn" patterning, convey the idea of the ceramic slab as an abstract, almost non-existent material which melts into the decorative motif applied to it, in a kind of pure wall covering.<br /> Through the patient selection of geometrical motifs and tests to verify their suitability for application to ceramic slabs, Nunziati aims to achieve a new material rather than a mere decoration, making this clear by also exploring its tactile dimension, with gouged and relief motifs. His "principle of coverings" therefore relates to ceramics' essence rather than their image: highlighting the versatility which, as we all know, has made ceramics an absolute material, a kind of cement that incorporates structure and finish in a virtually infinite range of applications. This is clearly indicated by the reference to the mashrabiya, a term meaning place where people drink in Arabic, which in Arabian architecture originally referred to the kind of veranda where people used to meet and rest, and over time has come to mean the wooden gratings that screened these places from the sun. Inspired by his trips to the Middle East, for Nunziati the geometric patterns of the mashrabiya become both an outline of his method of work and the form of what in fact becomes the key element in a new idea of space: a real location conceived around a strong, livable surface in which physical substance and decoration overlap to the point where they merge.</p>

RE

RE

fontanaarte > Table lamp

Inspired by the game of chess with their sinuous shapes, Re and Regina are the key characters of the chessboard. Their profiles stand out clearly in the white light diffused by opalescent glass. Real individuals, they play in pairs alternating spheres, cylinders and rings of light. Vertical the King (Re), horizontal the Queen (Regina). They can be placed next to each other or in different spots in the same room, be used as floor or table lamps, on a coffee table or a desk, both Re and Regina have the presence to create a context. The dimmer allows to modulate the light making it a surreal element with different degrees of intensity: an element of representation that releases energy in space when the light is bright, abstract and restful when the light is soft and low. Glass sculptures during the day in environments illuminated by natural light. Re and Regina are inspired by the history of art, from Cosmè Tura to the Flemish interiors of Jan Van Eych to the conceptual imagery of Marcel Duchamp who plays chess as a lifestyle. Re and Regina are Cartesian axes of a universe that crosses ages and cultures. In 2020 FontanaArte reintroduces these glass lamps as a sign of the expressive wealth contained in the great repertory of ideas that is the FontanaArte catalogue and, most importantly an homage to the talent of an artist who had a gift for calibrating the formal tension of a utilitarian object on a quest for unity among the arts.
